- Question
1
West, they've bid a game forcing 2 clubs, promising 23+ points. If you overcall 2 Hearts now with your 8 point hand, surely they're going to get you down lots? (and doubled of course). Might it be wiser to keep quiet for now, in case they end up in No Trumps ?

Answer
No! If they end up in no trumps, then it's a good lead indicator. And in spite of any concern about being doubled in 2 Hearts, (1) it's a good lead indicator; and (2) it messes up their bidding - now they can't give the usual answers of 2D for less than 8, or anything else for 8+.
Plus: West has 6 Hearts, so the damage will be limited, plus they don't know how many Hearts partner (East) has got. So they can't be too sure of a penalty score, which on this deal can't be too big since we're not vulnerable. So they, who are vulnerable, will be too keen to make their game, or Slam, with extra vulnerability bonuses than to worry about getting us off two or three tricks.
Finally, if they do end up in a Slam (very possible after a strong 2 club opening) then you've told your partner what to lead.

Have a look at East's hand. What should he lead?

Have a look at East's hand. What should he lead?
Answer
The overcalled suit, of course. And that's the only lead that can stop the enemy making a Slam, if they'd managed to bid it after West's disruptive overcall...
