- Question
1
The bidding ended at 4 Spades, and you're the declarer.
9 tricks are certain (5 Spades, 3 Hearts and a club). You've got one loser in clubs, so the job is to make sure you only lose 2 diamond tricks. How are you going to do it?

Answer
You can make the contract certain by ensuring that they lead diamonds, not you.

How can you make it certain they will lead diamonds?
- Question
2
How can you make it certain they will lead diamonds?
Answer
Simple: remove all the other suits in your hands, then give them the lead.....- Step one; win the opening trick after they lead the king of clubs
- Then draw trumps
- Then remove all the other suits:
- play Hearts 3 times;
- throw the lead away with your last club (you were always guaranteed to lose that trick).
All the other suits are now stripped from your hands.
If they then lead a Heart, you will ruff it in one hand and discard a diamond from the other ("ruff and discard"), thus limiting your future diamond losses to two tricks. Job done
If instead they lead a diamond, you'll play second hand low, and assuming they play one of their two (Ace / King) diamond winners as the third card in the trick, you'll play 4th hand low as well. Now they only have one diamond winner remaining to cope with your Q and J. Job done.
